Criminal Record Checks
Records will only be retrieved for criminal offences commited in South Africa.
Name Clearence Checks - to 2010
Up to mid 2010,criminal record checks can be initiated with just the Names ,Surnames,Date-of-birth
and South African ID number of applicants. These checks are conducted via the SAPS "Name Clearence "
system, and results in a "Negative" or "Possible Match" reply.
"Negative" result imply that the applicant has no records of illicit activity."Possible Match" results indicate
exactly that. They do not automatically imply that illicit activity records exist, and a full set of paper-based
fingerprint impressions are required to conclusively test the criminal record of the applicant.
AFIS Checks - during 2010
With the advent of new SAPS processes to be initiated sometime during 2010, all requests
for Criminal
Records must be accompanied by a full set of the candidates' fingerprints. The Criminal Name Clearence
check performed via the South African Police Services Criminal Record Center will be discontinued, and
become unavailable.
A request for a Criminal Record check MUST then be accompanied by a full set of fingerprints. Importantly,
these fingerprints may be in electronic format. This format for fingerprints has been determined, and can
only be forwarded to the SAPS via specific biometric devices and predetermined transfer mechanisms.
Electronic fingerprints must be captured on specific devices (manufactured by Sagem) by authorised and
trained operators, who themselves "connect" using their own fingerprints. |
